Two-Queen Cards
Playing Card Design
In 2018, the 80s cartoon She-Ra and the Princesses of Power was rebooted, this time prioritizing diverse representation of sexuality, gender, ethnicity, and body type. I sought to pay homage to the two main characters of the series, Adora and Catra, who are one of the first canon lesbian couples in children’s media. Two-Queen Cards seeks to playfully challenge the patriarchal and heteronormative nature of traditional playing cards. I drew these designs by hand before vectorizing them in Adobe Illustrator.
The design strays from traditional playing card imagery in many ways, however, I intentionally left one traditional queen-card element, the flower. I took the idea further by making it a gift which appears to be passing from Adora to Catra when the two cards are laid side by side. Unlike traditional playing cards, Two-Queen Cards also depict a loving relationship between the suit's royalty.
